Peter was a close friend, who died in 2000. It was through Peter that I (Pamela McLean) got involved with Nigeria. He was married to my friend Agnita, and living in London when she persuaded me to help with a project he was trying to launch "back home"in Ago-Are.
He was a great visionary, and inspired me to get deeply involved. Everything I have done since in Africa has sprung from the early work we did together for his organisation CAWD (Committee for African Welfare and Development) and for his pilot project "Oke-Ogun Community Development Agenda 2000 Plus".
Tragically Peter was killed when he was back in Nigeria working on the project. He was murdered by armed robbers who shot him. He had told me I would visit Nigeria and I had told him I never would. In fact my first trip to Africa was to represent Agnita at his funeral. She was unable to go as she was caring for their young children. She had also been warned against visiting Nigeria because of uncertainty around the circumstances of his death, and the motives of those who had killed him.
He was an intelligent, creative, determined, courageous and inspiring man, who was the son of an illiterate peasant and, against all the odds, became an IT professional. His burning passion was to use ICT (Information and Communication Technology) to give more opportunities to the people in his community. He was especially concerned for his peer-goup - the friends from primary school who were still toiling in the fields - a fate which he had escaped through some hard-won educational opportunities. His early death was a great loss.
