October First Thursday - youths, livelihoods, unemployment, violence, David and Goliath, and more

We had lively discussions today. Nine people from Kenya, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, UK and USA, joined me for my monthly "Drop in and chat with me" time. Ideally someone would write a real blog post on this (volunteer needed, please contact me if you might be interested ) This is my best attempt to quickly share what went on.

Cut and paste plus...

This is a very rougly edited cut and paste from the chat, with a few explanatory notes in brackets.

What is shown here is copied from the the main panel of the First Thursday etherpad screen display. The chat happens in a chat box to the side of the main panel - you can see both at http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/October-2013-First-Thursday In the original it's easy to see who writes what because it is colour coded.)

The cut and paste from the meeting

Welcome to Dadamac's First Thursday Meeting on October 3rd  2013
For more details about times for this meeting and the next, and for how "First Thursday" works see http://dadamac.net/blog/20130122/first-thursday-meetings-updates

Pattern of the meeting - please note it is fine for everyone to type at the same time. People have different connection speeds, and connections drop. We all join in the best way that we can.
  • Meet and greet
  • Discover shared interests that we want to discuss.
  • After one hour I usually say goodbye, but it is fine for people to keep chatting.
Some topics we have touched on so far today (I tried to update this as the chat was in progress - others added to it.)
  • Westgate attack in Kenya
  • Youths and livelihoods
  • Tom's "David and Goliath" carts - deaf youths selling water on one and fruit and veg on other
  • Need for ice box - costs 150 dollars
  • ? Solar powered ice box
  • Growing food to sell instead of buying it all
  • Youths and unemployment and violence   [Re outer and inner violence, consider learning yoga and/or tai chi, which make you physically,  mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong and healthy, and which are  also very good for self-defence. Tai chi and Qigong are closely related;  I am taking classes with a teacher in them. They are multi-level, like  Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art, which was practiced as a 'dance' by  black slaves, so the 'masters' would not recognize it as a martial art.  There are now lessons on YouTube for all of these practices.]
  • e-mentoring and e-safety  Lots of possibilities here, especially if people form cooperatives and include nurturing each other as part of the mission, along with sustainable economic development.
  • housing
  • Pamela - This was the list when I left at 4pm UK time (in theory First Thursday lasts for one hour, but people are welcome to continue chatting after I have gone)
Introductions - please introduce yourself, then anyone who comes to join the chat  can quickly see who is who. (It is also very useful for people who come here later and just want a quick idea of what happened. It is easy to read this main panel. It is hard to read all the chat history) I
Write you introduction below this piece of text  It is like using a wordprocessor. Just  bring your  cursor to the right place and start typing. Afterwards please  go back and  use  the chat box on the  Right Hand (RHS) for chatting
  • Im Gbade Adejumo from Oke O gun area of oyo state Nigeria
  • Pamela McLean - In UK using a laptop - initiator of "First Thursdays" and co-founder of Dadamac . This means that I already know most of the people who come to First Thursdays, or I know the person who has brought them here. My hope is that we will share news and discover shared interests, then we can share information from different viewpoints, and learn from each other. I learn new things every time I come to First Thursdays.
  • Deaf impact is here after along time, what do you think happens to te deaf when terorist attack..plaese pam make this atopic for achat
  • Tom is the founder of deafimapct and acoumuty developing with intrest in cereativty and innovativeness,
  • Olalekan Lawal - Yoruba World Institute UK. We tame technology for cultural revitalization, Knowledge Sharing & tackling information poverty.
  • Ken Owino - using a phone with a poor connection (so Pamela is writing the intro) Ken is a Kenyan currently living in Denmark. He is an acrobat and much more. Leads Nafsi acrobats.
  • David Mutua - Kenyan  living in USA - dipping into the meeting while at work so not contributing much
  • Julliet makhapila who lives in London and I was born in kenya
  • Hello - My name is ADEOYE ADEWOLU - I am in the business of encouraging Affordable Housing for our youths in Africa.
  • I trained as an Architect, Urban Designer/Planner. My passion is to help empower people to give them a voice and keep poverty at bay. You can see my basic intro on the website - http://www,adeoyeadewolu.com/Affordable-House
  • Mark Roest -- International Development, SeaWave Battery; co-founder DesignEarth.net; formerly in AIDS Relief Foundation, which became oneVillage Foundation, with a focus on the oneVillage Initiative. I wanted to be an architect when I was nine, and I'm very interested traditional natural building methods and designs. I'm also deeply involved with the Bosch Captive Column structural geometry (US Patent 3,501,880), and with wind and solar energy.
  • Don Northern Ireland (Intro written by Pamela - I had left by the time he arrived. I imagine this is Don McBurney from "Global Idiots for World Peace" who used to help me get to Nigeria to work on the Teachers Talking project.)
Facts to share - from the chat box
(This  is where I try to get a collection of the main facts that we share in the chat. The original chat is colour coded so you can easily see who wrote what -  http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/October-2013-First-Thursday )
  • Adeoye,  I took one year of the two year graduate program in Urban Studies at  San Jose State University (in northern California). In that program, I met a woman architect from Ghana whose mission was to do very attractive  designs using traditional natural building methods, in order to remove  the stigma and get people to switch back from concrete and steel. I believe I can still dig up her contact information if you are interested. I think she works for a government agency involved in housing now.
  • I  saw a great modular design in bamboo done by a similar firm in Vietnam  on Gizmag. They have whole categories of small housing and affordable  housing now, so it's easy to find what different groups are doing around  the world -- ideas you can adapt to your environment.
  • Youths and unemployment and violence   Re outer and inner violence, consider learning yoga and/or tai chi,  which make you physically,  mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong  and healthy, and which are  also very good for self-defence. Tai chi  and Qigong are closely related;  I am taking classes with a teacher in  them. They are multi-level, like  Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art,  which was practiced as a 'dance' by  black slaves, so the 'masters'  would not recognize it as a martial art.  There are now lessons on  YouTube for all of these practices.
  • e-mentoring and e-safety   Lots of possibilities here, especially if people form cooperatives and include nurturing each other as part of the mission, along with  sustainable economic development.

(The real life of the meeting is in the chat box history at http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/October-2013-First-Thursday)

Some notes to encourage you to dip into the chat history

David and Goliath are two hand carts that I remember Tom raising money for several years ago. They provide a livelihood for some deaf youths he works with. He gave an update and future plans. We also talked about motorised carts, and John Dada's interest in working with roadside mechanics and apprentices.

Ken, Tom and Julliet all have close connections with Nairobi, so we touched on the tragedy at Westgate.

Thinking of violence we thought of Nigeria, and current problems there.

Sectarian violence is often fuelled by unemployment, so we returend to that theme. John Dada is trying to tackle it at Fantsuam - Dadamac Knowledge Centre - Learning for Livelihoods

We got into politics, and practicalities - you are wlcome to read our chat in full at at http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/October-2013-First-Thursday and please contact me if you can think of anyone who'd like to write blogs about our chats or would help us in any other way How to help Dadamac - From re-tweeting to mentoring

You're also welcome to join our chats on the First Thursday of the month - just type "First Thursday meetings" in the chat box to find the updates and links to chats.
