Woman and ICT

No two UK-Nigeria meetings are the same and this week was no exception. Although prior to each meeting I email an agenda this is only a guideline and acts as a memory jogger to ourselves to review certain aspects of the many Fantsuam Foundation projects . This week after item number one the agenda which is always “Meet and Greet”, John Dada used the hourly typed meeting to help formulate his thoughts and ideas. Although this is often a part of what our meetings are for this was the first time that we have devoted a whole meeting to such...

From Antenna to Schools in rural Nigeria

Bala was not at the latest UK-Nigeria online meeting - but he had an excellent excuse! For rather than joining this week’s online sesson, he was busy setting up the new antenna which will allow Fantsuam Foundation’s Academy to receive free bandwidth for the next five years. Followers of this blog may recall that FF’s Community Communication Centre (CCC) was funded by the Nigerian Government and it was part of their commitment at that time to also provide this free bandwidth. The UK team were delighted to learn that they are now ready to fulfil that promise. John Dada explained:...

Last Mile Connectivity

Dadamac UK have received the following information from John Dada . "We at Fantsuam Foundation have been making enquiries about how we can leverage the coming broadband revolution for Nigeria's last mile connectivity: our pilot in Kafanchan aims to reach 1 Million under-served and un-served rural communities of Nigeria with affordable and accessible connectivity. The Nigerian Broadband Consortium which is providing firbre connectivity to tertiary institutions is able to offer 1kbps @ $1.00 The lowest VSAT offer we can get at the moment is 310% more expensive. If Broadband is to be accessible and affordable at the bottom of the...

Kafanchan Peace Market Traders launched

The weekly online UK-Nigeria meetings have been established in their present format for more than three years. However, following Nigeria’s terrible post-election violence, John this week identified a new and unexpected benefit of our regular sessions - explaining that the Dadamac meetings are “evolving into a balm, a tonic, a forum where Fantsuam Foundation can unburden ... a psycho-social element of our weekly meeting”. The rural community has been badly shaken by the attacks and, although the news reporters appear to have moved on, the real story is still unfolding. For example, how people from both sides of the religious...

Getting back to Business

John joined this week’s online UK-Nigeria session from Abuja, where he was due to attend a number of meetings - the most significant of which from our point of view was with the French Embassy. At this, John was to discuss the promised support for Attachab . Meanwhile Kelechi and Chollom joined us from Fantsuam while the UK provided three participants, based in Leeds and London. We were pleased to hear there are reports of some semblance of normality returning to Kafanchan as people of all faiths were beginning to interact at the old and new market sites. John informed...

Phoenix gradually emerging from the fire

We were pleased to catch up online with some familiar ‘faces’ at the UK-Nigeria team meeting this week. However it was clear from our discussion that although the post-electoral violence in Kaduna State has subsided - helped by the continued presence of soldiers - things were still not back to normal. It became evident that in the wake of the destruction there is much rebuilding to be done, both physically and emotionally. On the physical side, many buildings and homes were destroyed. In previous blogs you can read about the destruction of the vibrant Kafanchan market and the emergence of...

From Hausa to Rice - all in a week's work!

Another Wednesday UK-Nigeria online meeting - and once again it delivered real gems of information. During the week John Dada sent an email about the Zitt localization Project which raises the importance of local languages. Please see blog for additional information. Following on from this the team heard that Beekeeping manuals had been received at Fantsuam Foundation and that these were currently being translated into Hausa by FF staff. The plan is then to send a translated copy back to the UK, where photos will be inserted and the manuals made into hard copies which will be sent back to...

Zittnet - "multi site" Congratulations!

New Mast 2009 Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community This week’s UK-Nigeria online skype meeting did not have the usual mix of team members. John sent his apologies in advance as he had a visit from Save the Children to attend to. He also passed on apologies from other members busy with various Fantsuam Foundation duties. However, despite his absence, John emailed his input for the appropriate agenda items. Our diminished numbers provided the opportunity for Zittnet manager Bala and Chollom, the network Administrator to give a detailed update about Zittnet . For a quick background to Zittnet (the first rural...

Broadband for Nigeria (BB4NG)

Sickle Cell Screening reaches 2,215 children and increasing!

The UK and Nigeria teams were able to exchange information via their usual typed skype meeting. John Dada , although unable to attend personally this week, emailed us with the following exciting update about Fantsuam Foundation ’s real contribution in combating Sickle Cell Disease. As part of the Cohort Pilot Study he gave us the following latest statistics: So far he has successfully managed to screen 2,215 children for Sickle Cell disease. In addition to those screened on the UN Sickle Cell Awareness Day in June and those screened in Gwantu, an additional 630 children have recently been screened in...
