News in from Fantsuam

John Dada of Fantsuam sent Dadamac UK the following updates plus some wonderful photos. (the one featured here shows John at the wheel of the Fast Tractor ). John informed us : "Sixteen youths were needed to help offload the implements from the trailer of the FastTractor. THis has now freed the trailer to be used for other farm work such as bringing home farm produce. This is expected to start in the next two weeks. Some clients have come to request to have the tractor fetch some building sands from river banks and the driver will start that next...

Talking Rubbish....again!

"The safe disposal of plastic waste is a perennial problem that gets worse by the day, so we have to be committed to efforts to control it". These were the words of John Dada in 2010 and at last it seems that Fantsuam Foundation will be leading by the way as it tackles this perennial problem with the help of Ron Dennis of Developing Technologies and his University students aided by funding from Comic Relief. The last details are being finalised now for the initial 3 month feasibility study and at this week’s UK-Nigeria meeting John informed us, via email,...

A week's news in brief

During this week’s UK-Nigeria meeting we covered a variety of topics ranging from waste plastic recycling to water and sanitation and e-learning. Below are the summaries of these varied discussions! John Dada informed us that the NEWSAN steering committee meeting went well and “ Fantsuam Foundation is now headquarters for six states advocacy activities.” John went on to explain that: “ The advocacy is to improve citizens voice in budgetary and project implementation processes”. Diagnostic Laboratory: Michigan State Uni sent some more equipments for Zipak Lab. The plan is that the laboratory will become operational by March. Comic Relief and...

New staff but old witchcraft accusations

My weekly involvement with the news from Fantsuam Foundation as documented by these blogs should have prepared me for the unexpected but again it was shocking to hear of yet another accusation of witchcraft. John Dada explained that it was the new team members Emmanuel and Ayuba who since the last meeting had been at the centre of a rescue of an elderly mama who was accused of witchcraft. The FF team held a meeting with the entire family on Tuesday(17th), and their nurse had been to provide drugs and further treatment for the mama. As Emmanuel stated : “These...

News from UK-Nigeria meeting

At this week’s UK-Nigeria online meeting John Dada was able to update us about the important work that he and Fantsuam Foundation are doing for the elderly woman in their community. Previously we had heard about the ongoing Kakas (grandmothers) programme and John had recently told us the Helpage International had asked FF to collect some of the "voices" of the Kakas to input into the UN Review of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and its Political Declaration, MIPAA. Focus groups have now be organised so that we can listen to and learn from these Grandmothers. John...

Trying to prevent a famine

The second half of this week’s UK-Nigeria weekly online meeting took a slight departure from the norm as we invited Ray who, in his own words, explained that he has “ a 20 year commitment to supporting violence reduction work and agriculture/climate change work/famine prevention in West Africa”. This experience is of significant to John Dada and his team who are looking to develop an integrated plan that addresses the roots of the conflicts in Kafanchan and Jos. John is also currently seeking supports/funds for his latest intervention which is aimed at “Preparing for the Hunger Months in Kafanchan: aftermath...

Good news from Fantsuam

Two pieces of good news provided the highlight of this week’s UK-Nigeria meeting. The first was that the peer educators projec t was starting that very day. The second was that officials from the French Embassy - who were visiting Fantsuam Foundation (FF) at the time of last week’s meeting - had agreed to resume funding for the Attachab project. John Dada told us that in principle the project has been approved and Fantsuam are now mobilising workers to the site. He further informed us that the French Embassy had reduced the previously-discussed budget by 20% (this was all put...

Attachab

Despite the UK-Nigeria meeting being less than our usual hour, this didn’t affect the usual flow of quality information between the two countries. John explained that he needed to leave shortly as Fantsuam Foundation were expecting a delegation from the French Embassy in Abuja. The UK were very pleased to hear this as they had been disappointed to learn previously (in the wake of the sectarian violence in April) the French Embassy had suspended their support for Attachab. However, recently they called John to say they would like to now reactivate their commitment and so he was meeting with them...

Handwashing Day!

Handwashing and libraries were two of the subjects up for discussion during this week’s online UK-Nigeria meeting. John Dada informed us that Global Handwashing Day falls on 15th October. A Fantsuam team member was in Kaduna to discuss Fantsuam Foundation’s participation. John said: “We would like to raise awareness in the local schools on basic handwashing, but the schools have no running water, and some have no toilets. “We are thinking of installing some basic but affordable hand-washing stations in a few of the schools. It’s a small step, but in the right direction.” John explained that a good first...

Water Matters!

During this week's UK-Nigeria online meeting John Dada explained: " Fantsuam is the zonal headquarters of the Nigerian Network on Water and Sanitation, NEWSAN, and we are actively engaged in working with the Kaduna State Government to ensure budget line items on Water and Sanitation are recognized". He went on to explain that: " Water and Sanitation is an area of service that is fundamental to issues of health, food security etc....... Over the years there has been very little input from communities into the annual budgeting process. Fantsuam is now part of a consortium of Community Based Organisations working...
