Developing the Knowledge Resource Centre

Organising the 6th Dadamac Day anniversary celebrations took up the majority of the allotted hour for this week’s UK-nigeria meeting. The theme agreed upon was “ Dadamac goes Glocal” and was to be focused around the Knowledge Resource Centre at Fantsuam Foundation. Although the KRC is a physical space and does have a few resources and students, it is virtually where it is strongest with people and energy gathering around it. It is here where local experts can connect with the global community. The KRC is not to be confused with Fantsuam Academy which offers a range of courses which...

John Dada welcomes go-ahead for community radio

John has just emailed the UK with news of this fantastic breakthrough. Fantsuam Foundation has been a member of the national advocacy team that lobbied for the establishment of community radio in Nigeria. John has been waiting for this initiative for many years and so has already started discussions on setting up a local station and producing content! What he needs now potential partners. If interested please contact Dadamac. Full announcement from the AMARC website: "The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters ( AMARC ) today welcomed the decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria to give the go-ahead for...

Gayl's a star!

Gayl Kennedy Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community Congratulations from the Dadamac team to Gayl Kennedy who has been honoured as Mifos’ August’s star contributor (Mifos is a Grameen Foundation initiative). Her expertise in helping Fantsuam Foundation to implement an MIS system, which includes Mifos, is crucial to the continued success of this Nigerian NGO’s acclaimed microfinance program. Gayl’s six- month assignment at Fantsuam Foundation, as a VSO volunteer, is due to end in December.

From Hausa to Rice - all in a week's work!

Another Wednesday UK-Nigeria online meeting - and once again it delivered real gems of information. During the week John Dada sent an email about the Zitt localization Project which raises the importance of local languages. Please see blog for additional information. Following on from this the team heard that Beekeeping manuals had been received at Fantsuam Foundation and that these were currently being translated into Hausa by FF staff. The plan is then to send a translated copy back to the UK, where photos will be inserted and the manuals made into hard copies which will be sent back to...

Zittnet - "multi site" Congratulations!

New Mast 2009 Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community This week’s UK-Nigeria online skype meeting did not have the usual mix of team members. John sent his apologies in advance as he had a visit from Save the Children to attend to. He also passed on apologies from other members busy with various Fantsuam Foundation duties. However, despite his absence, John emailed his input for the appropriate agenda items. Our diminished numbers provided the opportunity for Zittnet manager Bala and Chollom, the network Administrator to give a detailed update about Zittnet . For a quick background to Zittnet (the first rural...

Developing the Knowledge Resource Centre

Tables for the KRC Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community At this week's UK-Nigeria online meeting it was fitting that learning at the Knowledge Resource Centre using Zittnet's enabled internet connection was the main focus. It was decided by the team that the First Thursday " open" meeting would in future be a focus for the Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC) users at Fantsuam Foundation. However, in readiness for this additional computers will need to be sourced. It was suggested that 4 - 5 computers are required and will then need to be "skyped"

Training in Rural Nigeria

School in rural Nigeria Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community This week’s UK-Nigeria meeting returned to a theme which is at the heart of of all that Fantsuam Foundation does: namely education and training. This was reflected in most of the items which were on the agenda for discussion this week. First the team discussed the plans for the Eco-village at Attachab . Fantsuam is looking at the feasibility of involving students from the College of Education and the College of Agriculture from Samaru, a village some 35km from Kafanchan. These college students are required to have hands-on-experience in established farms...

Weekly update from Fantsuam

This week’s online meeting saw us pick up the threads of several topics we had discussed in previous weeks. Among the matters we examined were: Sickle Cell Disease: As previously mentioned, the screening programme for Sickle Cell amaong children under 6 years has halted temporarily. But it must have reached or at least be very close to the 6,000 target set by John Dada for his team. Fantsuam Foundation was recently visited by American Embassy staff and John reported that they seemed very impressed with the work. He is now waiting to hear if they are going to help support...

Attachab

Activities at Attachab proved the focus of this week’s UK-Nigeria online meeting. And the subject looks set to top the agenda for the next month as a result of the news that John has found an ideal site - complete with the magnificently-named river Wonderful which flows through it. Yet while the vision is in place and progress is being made, the speed at which work proceeds is hampered by a lack of funds. The team are looking at proposals concerning permaculture, climate change and sustainable livelihoods. To date Attachab has an ecodome (probably the first in Nigeria), a compressed...

Technical Talk

This week’s online meeting began with a testing technical question. As regular participants will know, we “meet” virtually every week using the Skype networking programme. However, since most cyber cafes lack this facility, the query was raised as to whether we might exclude people by adopting the same format for our monthly First Thursday meetings. It was therefore suggested that using Yahoo Messenger might be a better option. However the vote from the Fantsuam Foundation was that Skype remained the preferable format for them as well as being easier to log into, it was the most effective alternative for sending...
