A busy week at Fantsuam

News of an assortment of comings and goings kicked off this week’s online meeting between the UK and Nigeria teams. We were told of the imminent departures of three of the VSO team members who have provided such invaluable service at Fantsuam. At the same time, we were informed of some new arrivals and the welcome new appointment of a Programs Manager. In addition to this during our busy hour online, we also covered topics ranging from Sickle Cell. screening, bandwidth issues, and beekeeping! Cicely, Lauri and Dori We were sad to be reminded by John that Cicely, Lauri and Dori,...

Nutritional and Educational support for OVCs at Ube Primary School Ungwa Yanshi

NUTRITIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL SUPPRT FOR OVCs AT UBE PRI SCHL UNGWA YANSHI Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community Our weekly UK-Nigeria team meeting opened with the exciting news that Fantsuam Foundation VSO volunteer Teleri was about to be interviewed on BBC radio. It was a marvellous opportunity to spread the word, and we were later told that she had proved a great ambassador for FF and Dadamac - and had even persuaded the Radio Northampton interviewer to publish links to our website from the station’s own page! Elsewhere, one of the week’s main Project updates came from Edi and concerned the...

Broadband for Nigeria (BB4NG)

John Dada kindly sent this information to the UK, in an email, as we were holding our weekly Skype online UK-Nigeria Meeting in respose to the UK requesting an update from the meeting. AllVoices Article Vanguard Article PRELIMINARY REPORT OF BROADBAND FOR NIGERIA (BB4NG) STAKEHOLDERS FORUM held on Wednesday July 28, 2008 in Abuja RELEASED TO THE PRESS AS PUBLIC INFORMATION NIGERIANS WANT BREAD AND BROADBAND!

A Diverse Wednesday Meeting!

Our weekly meetings are always eagerly anticipated as so often the information that the UK receives from Nigeria is of such high calibre. This week was no exception. In fact it poses a problem for me - how best to captivate all the information about the various developments at Fantsuam Foundation ? As a result I have decided to do a brief blog now, which will just give the gist of this week’s online UK-Nigeria meeting and I will then follow this up with smaller blogs about the individual projects. First John Dada sent us some information about the recent...

Training in Rural Nigeria

JAWS and Fantsuam Academy Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community One of the great benefits of our weekly typed meetings, compared to the more traditional spoken variety, is the ability to “dip in and out” of them. This was aptly demonstrated by John Dada on Wednesday - for despite the “distraction” of chairing the important BB4NG meeting in Abuja, he was able to read what we were discussing and even appoint a chairman for our team meeting! John had already emailed the UK group with his contribution to this week’s agenda, but it came as a welcome surprise that (albeit briefly)...

Talking Rubbish!

This week’s meeting proved to be as diverse as ever. Topics ranged from sickle cell, rice production to recycling waste plastic! However, first John Dada informed the team that later that day, Fantsuam was expecting a visit from the President of the Nigerian Association of Telecommunication Companies. John is himself chairman of the Forum BB4NG ( Broadband for Nigeria). On 28th July there is a meeting in Abuja of the various stakeholders in order to discuss the important issues surrounding the provision of broadband in Nigeria. For additional details please see QueenChichi’s article for AllVoices. Dadamac, Fantsuam and a UK...

Wednesday Meeting

John sent his apologies for this week’s online meeting - but had a very good excuse! For as the UK and Nigeria teams staged their weekly virtual get-together, he was 120 kms away from Kafanchan screening local children for potentially deadly Sickle Cell Disease. However this didn’t stop John contributing to the meeting as he sent an email which gave his input for each of the topics on the agenda. His screening session followed on from the hugely successful UN Sickle cell awareness day held by Fantsuam Foundation last month, and ties in also with the Cohort Pilot Study. During...

E-learning in rural Nigeria

Nearly half this week’s UK-Nigeria online meeting was spent discussing the Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC) at Fantsuam Foundation (FF) - but it was well worth it! Kelechi, Director of Fantsuam’s Academy, and recently-appointed KRC Officer Ladi updated the UK on their plans for the KRC, with the help of John. Kelechi told us: “Presently, we are reviewing the Workplan for the KRC, working out a good strategy towards more purposeful service delivery.” He added that “the KRC is custodian to all learning resources of the Academy”. John explained that they see the KRC being “a learning hub - a repository...

"A Hectic Day at Fantsuam"

The Fantsuam Foundation team could have been forgiven had they spent the whole hour of last Wednesday's UK-Nigeria online meeting talking about the success of their UN Sickle Cell Awareness day which had taken place just a few days earlier. However, they knew the UK team had already been fully updated about this superb event via Cicely's blog, John's report about the radio panel and, of course, by viewing the great photos taken by those on site. So instead we moved on swiftly to the next pressing issues. John started the meeting by explaining that it had been a "hectic"...

Radio Panelist UN Sickle Cell Awareness Day

Radio Panelist UN Sickle Cell Awareness Day Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community John has just sent me an update and a photo about the UN Sickle Cell awareness day that he and Fantsuam Foundation organised. John tells that: "We had a radio panel discussion yesterday (18th) and the feedbacks we got were very encouraging. The TV Panel discussion was recorded in open air. We had two genetic counsellors, two parents and a sickle cell patient on the panel to share experiences and raise awareness about tomorrow's event.
