What made us think this week!

ONE team member described this week’s UK-Nigeria meeting as “very thought-provoking”. Well I can certainly concur with that! The bulk of the session was spent discussing the Knowledge Resource Centre. It was important that the team all shared their vision of what the KRC future might be. One of the fundamental starting points was for us all to recognise the importance of our own learning journey. This is a “foreign” concept for many, who often see only formal accredited education as having worth or importance. The group were able to see that the staff at Fantsuam Foundation are in fact...

Fantsuam's Integrated development

New mast going up Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community John has kindly sent me this update about Fantsuam's Foundations ' approach to integrated development - as written by Bot Chollom. Chollom is himself an integral part of the Zittnett , Fantsuam and the Dadamac team. " In fulfilment of its Mission to eliminate poverty and disadvantage through INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT programs, Fantsuam ensures that its various programs also compliment each other. This is the season for each department to work out its programs, work plans and budgets for the next year, and each of the profit making services has pledged to...

Gayl's a star!

Gayl Kennedy Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community Congratulations from the Dadamac team to Gayl Kennedy who has been honoured as Mifos’ August’s star contributor (Mifos is a Grameen Foundation initiative). Her expertise in helping Fantsuam Foundation to implement an MIS system, which includes Mifos, is crucial to the continued success of this Nigerian NGO’s acclaimed microfinance program. Gayl’s six- month assignment at Fantsuam Foundation, as a VSO volunteer, is due to end in December.

Language: a barrier to development?

John Dada and his team are always mindful of the need to provide information for the commnunity which they serve in the local language(s). For example, recently sickle cell information was translated from English into Hausa and this process is to be repeated for other educational data. It was therefore very interesting to read John's recent email (shared below), which explains this issue of language in more detail. "Fantsuam Foundation, has been reaching out to underserved rural populations since 2001. Its services addresses information poverty, providing services that unlocks computer and internet opportunities for threatened minority languages, people with low...

Training in Rural Nigeria

School in rural Nigeria Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community This week’s UK-Nigeria meeting returned to a theme which is at the heart of of all that Fantsuam Foundation does: namely education and training. This was reflected in most of the items which were on the agenda for discussion this week. First the team discussed the plans for the Eco-village at Attachab . Fantsuam is looking at the feasibility of involving students from the College of Education and the College of Agriculture from Samaru, a village some 35km from Kafanchan. These college students are required to have hands-on-experience in established farms...

Weekly update from Fantsuam

This week’s online meeting saw us pick up the threads of several topics we had discussed in previous weeks. Among the matters we examined were: Sickle Cell Disease: As previously mentioned, the screening programme for Sickle Cell amaong children under 6 years has halted temporarily. But it must have reached or at least be very close to the 6,000 target set by John Dada for his team. Fantsuam Foundation was recently visited by American Embassy staff and John reported that they seemed very impressed with the work. He is now waiting to hear if they are going to help support...

Technical Talk

This week’s online meeting began with a testing technical question. As regular participants will know, we “meet” virtually every week using the Skype networking programme. However, since most cyber cafes lack this facility, the query was raised as to whether we might exclude people by adopting the same format for our monthly First Thursday meetings. It was therefore suggested that using Yahoo Messenger might be a better option. However the vote from the Fantsuam Foundation was that Skype remained the preferable format for them as well as being easier to log into, it was the most effective alternative for sending...

Nutritional and Educational support for OVCs at Ube Primary School Ungwa Yanshi

NUTRITIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL SUPPRT FOR OVCs AT UBE PRI SCHL UNGWA YANSHI Originally uploaded by Dadamac Community Our weekly UK-Nigeria team meeting opened with the exciting news that Fantsuam Foundation VSO volunteer Teleri was about to be interviewed on BBC radio. It was a marvellous opportunity to spread the word, and we were later told that she had proved a great ambassador for FF and Dadamac - and had even persuaded the Radio Northampton interviewer to publish links to our website from the station’s own page! Elsewhere, one of the week’s main Project updates came from Edi and concerned the...

Talking Rubbish!

This week’s meeting proved to be as diverse as ever. Topics ranged from sickle cell, rice production to recycling waste plastic! However, first John Dada informed the team that later that day, Fantsuam was expecting a visit from the President of the Nigerian Association of Telecommunication Companies. John is himself chairman of the Forum BB4NG ( Broadband for Nigeria). On 28th July there is a meeting in Abuja of the various stakeholders in order to discuss the important issues surrounding the provision of broadband in Nigeria. For additional details please see QueenChichi’s article for AllVoices. Dadamac, Fantsuam and a UK...
