Open Source in Rural Nigeria

The crucial topic of open source software proved the highlight of Wednesday's weekly online UK-Nigeria meeting. Interestingly, the UK side were informed that Linux is a key part of the curriculum on the 'IT Essentials' Cisco course, run by Fantsuam staff. It was explained to us that the first approach is to introduce the students to the basic concept of open source. Kelechi told us that part of the students' installation module includes installing Linux as well as Windows. We also learned from John, a trainer, that most of Fantsuam's students are very familiar with Ubuntu. We were extremely interested...

Development-trade-aid-permaculture-power generation

I'm covering two events - First the GlobalNet 21 Meet-up called " The Path To Development -Trade or Aid " (yesterday evening) and secondly the March First Thursday meeting (this afternoon) which predictably did not go as planned - but was a great session involving people from three continents, eight countries and a confusing number of time zones. First Thursday was supposed to last for "about an hour' - on permaculture (especially kitchen gardens and jatropha), but went on longer, and then turned into to Special Interest Group, on Skype, about appropriate power. We started at 12.00 noon (London time)...

British African Federation (February Meeting)

Yesterday, after John Iruaga had finished his Twitter learning session , I went out to the February networking event of the British African Federation (BAF). Topics included:investments; Business Safari Missions; low-cost migrant remittances, micro-finance, micro-savings and currency exchange; business match-making and mentoring; a new weapon against mosquitos (and cockroaches); tractors and a trade mission. As a result there are introductions to make and activities I would like to see happen. BAF David Smith (BAF chairman) started off by reviewing the objectives of the British African Federation. It is still a very young organsiation so I can't direct you to a...

Fola's phone and baby boy

It's almost exactly ten years since I was first involved in communication between UK and Nigeria. In those days my friend, the late Peter Adetunji Oyawale, could only phone one person in his entire Oke-Ogun Community Development network. If we made a phone call it was to the landline of Chief Adetola, in the state capital Ibadan. What a contrast now. Today, from rural Ago-Are i got this text: "Mornin ma, my wiv gave birth 2 a bouncin baby boy yesterday afternoon, thanks Fola." Not only did Fola send his information to me, via SMS he also went online through...

Universal Learning Centre

I have no personal experience of the Universal Learning Centre but I came across it today because I moderate comments at dadamac.net and someone posted this one: Haiti, a legitimate cause Hey, I'm seeking help for the kids of Haiti. I'm doing my part for a non-profit organization in which the main focus is to creating oppurtunities for the children in haiti. If anybody wants to give money then this is the site: Donate to Haiti or Help Haiti They give children in Haiti books and teach them. Yes, they're a real cause. Please help us I confess my first...

Photo feedback loop

This is how our feedback works Marcus Simmons taught about mulching on a permaculture training course. Back in the UK he asked for feedback. Feedback was requested during a Dadamac UK-Nigeria team-meeting This photo was sent back to the UK Marcus saw that the mulch was being laid too thinly He sent a detailed email suggesting that one area should be covered with a much thicker mulch, so that people could see if they would get a better result that way.

Permaculture Introductions

I love to introduce people to each other, so now that I am back from the Video Bridge (Streaming Sharing and Learning) workshop I am doing introductions for people with overlapping interests related to permaculture and similar concerns. Marcus Simmons is our expert on permaculture and Wael Al Saad from the workshop has many interesting ideas which he has written about on Wiser Earth in an article called Co-Create Holistic Green Economy in global Palestine . I've phoned Marcus about Wael and had a Skype chat with Wael about Marcus, and now just need to share their email addresses. Helge...

Back from Streaming Sharing and Learning

I am back from the Video Bridge Streaming Sharing and Learning workshop in Vienna. Over the next few days I will be reflecting on what went on, looking for patterns, and seeing how things might continue in ways that are relevant (both to the Dadamac community and to me as a learner). This may result in a flurry of blogs - if it does please forgive me. At the workshop Franz did a great job of enabling the participants to become a community. The participants all represented communities of some kind. Franz ran a video bridge session, linking us with...

Pushing up Farm Productivity

Dear Pam, Here is an interesting piece on the role that pulses and oilseeds play in nutritional security. Though the article talks about the state of Indian agriculture, it has some interesting points on increasing agricultural productivity. In order to progress, the mindset with regard to the following two factors needs to change, says Dr Lux Lakshmanan, Director, California Agriculture Consulting Service. Factor no 1: It is not the farmer who makes the food: he is only a facilitator. Food is actually made by plants. Since plants do not talk, their needs are understood through research and experimentation. Factor no...

Dadamac beyond Nigeria

Usually Wednesday morning is dominated by the UK-Nigeria online team meeting - but today we are getting close to Christmas so there is no meeting and I am taking time to think about Dadamac beyond Nigeria, and about including more of my wider network (present and future) here at www.dadamac.net . Dadamac.net online community The idea behind dadamac.net is that it will be less like a website, and more like an online "home/office/meeting-place/study-space/club/whatever-we-want-it-to-be" for people (present and future) who are connected with Dadamac ideas and activities. I am still cautious of using the term "Dadamac community" beyond the core group...
