Pamela's Blog

Philosophy in action - Diogenes and now.

Diogenes was a man who unquestionably "walked his talk". Tim Rayner wrote a great blog about him " Cynic simplicity: the courage to think ". It made me think of people today who are living courageous, and at times lonely, lives because of what they think and the authenticity of their actions. T hey are people who are seers (see-ers, seeing things as they are) visionaries (seeing where things could go), and prophets (speaking out their truths). They are explorers and pioneers in our present landscape of rapid change, people who see how it might be and go ahead of...

First post from our Dadamac Communications Officer at Fantsuam

John Dada, currently recovering from a bout of malaria, sent a blog from the Fantsuam office today. It was written by Mercy, our first ever Dadamac Communications/Information Officer, and I have posted it below followed by some introductory notes. MEETING PAM I met Pam McLean this morning via skype as part of my induction as information officer for Dadamac UK-Nigeria at FF. She taught me, a lot at a different level I will say. Yesterday was my first day of work at Fantsuam and I am still trying to get my head round what I should be doing. I have been...

First Thursday Group 2014 - Despite the glitch we've started

I declare that The First Thursday Group is well and truly launched - or if not exactly "launched" it is at least splashing out. We couldn't have our usual etherpad online meeting today so "First Thursday people" did other things instead. I have two emails to share about hopes and plans for 2014 (from Ade Adewolu and Andrius Kulikauskas) I got a text (from Guy Cowley) and a phone call (from Olalekan Lawal) when their attempts to join the January First Thurday meetign resulted in "Cannot GET /January-2014-First-Thursday" so we det up an impromtu skype meeting instead. John Dada and...

First Thursdays 2014

This is an edited version of the invitation to the first "First Thursday" meeting of 2014, on January 2nd at http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/January-2014-First-Thursday (More information at First Thursday Meeting Updates ) Focus - hopes and challenges It's the first meeting of 2014 so let's take the long view. What are our hopes and challenges for the year ahead? Do we have overlapping interests? How might we help each other? A possible glitch There has been a technical problem which we hope will be sorted by tomorrow, but if you do have problems connecting don't keep trying. Instead, you could use the time...

Digital Footprint and Employment

Steve Thompson wrote "I’m developing a new course for seeking employment supported by digital tools and social media. This also gives some consideration to Digital Footprint, sometimes referred to as Net Rep (Reputation). (snip) I’m going a different route entirely and I’m introducing participants to a whole clean slate where all their social media accounts are dedicated to one aim: finding a job more in his blog. I commented I like this. I much prefer evidence of what people have done (which I can ask deep questions about) rather than some certificate. There's one tweak I'd suggest to what you've...

John Dada talking about internet access at Fantsuam

John touches briefly on some main points in the history of Fantsuam Foundation as a provider of connectivity in this video which was recorded in London on November 26th (the day after Dadamac Day 2013). When you've seen the video you may like to know more about some of the things he mentions. The satellite dish The first time I visted Fantsuam, in 2004, Cisco courses were running and there was Internet connectivity on site thanks to the VSAT that John mentions (more at Fantsuam takes the lonely road to rural wireless internet - By APCNews , GOA, INDIA ,...

Dadamac Day 2013 - The video

Our celebration of Dadamac Day 2013 with John Dada and Indy Johar in London is now ready for viewing. I explained the background in Reflections on Dadamac Day 2013 Now you can experience the event through this video - http://vimeo.com/81221900 Contents I haven't tried to mention all that was covered - I've just given "the shape" of the session in case you are looking for something specific. The timings for these contents are given in minutes and seconds and are approximate. Francis Sealey's introduction 2.55 - Pamela McLean on the start of Dadamac, a greeting from Fola (representing "Dadamac online")...

Reflections on Dadamac Day 2013

November 25th was a special day for Dadamac. Like many Dadamac things it gradually emerged as various loosely related pieces came together, so I'm describing the various pieces for the benefit of newcomers to our story. GlobalNet21 I'm a member of GlobalNet21 (GN21) and last August I was one of the members who took up the invitation to speak for 5 mins at a GN21 event called Speakers Corner. I talked about Dadamac - based in UK, Nigeria and online. Speakers Corner led to a longer slot in another GN21 event about Africa which in turn led to the formation...

Connecting my connections and Dadamac

I love London for the interesting people, projects and ideas I connect with. I'm organising an event here with John Dada - it's a face-to-face meetup between the African side of Dadamac and people in London. It's a rare opportunity for my UK contacts to discover more about John, me and Dadamac - and to make connections with each other. Given my enthusiasm for community building, conversations and cross-cultural collaborations I'll be inviting a variety of people to attend. The event The event is Challenges and Opportunities for Innovation . You will not need to be a paid up member...

Dadamac Day 2013 - Challenges and Opportunities for Innovation

Each November we do something to mark " Dadamac Day ". Like most annual events it's a chance to involve others, to celebrate how far we've come, and share hopes of where we're going. It usually involves the Internet, and bringing people together from the UK and African sides of Dadamac and other locations too. Something different in 2013 This year it's different. For the first time ever Dadamac Day is being marked with a face-to-face meeting instead of something online. John Dada (the Nigerian side of Dadamac) and I (the UK side) will be together at Impact Hub Westminster...
