An approach to online community building - TOCI and COTW

The approach When it comes to online collaboration my interest is in the “socio-tech” side of things, so I consider three aspects. The people who are collaborating (who are becoming in some sense an online community). Their overlapping interests (the information they want to share, the initiatives they want to collaborate on). Tthe technology they will use during their collaboration. Many of my contacts come from a background of “ICT” in education or development., and this led me to use the letters “I”, ”C” and “T” as a memory jogger for my three categories. Normally (in ICT4Ed&D) the “ICT” is...

Water matters! Fantsuam, Nigeria

As usual the weekly news from Fantsuam Foundation this week was impressive - especially as it was all condensed into an hour during the online skype meeting. John chaired the meeting initially, but needed to leave slightly early as he was required to attend to the VSO visitors. VSO was visiting John and the team for the joint annual review of their programmes with FF. We look forward to hearing how this went next week. However, before John left he was able to give us an excellent update and feedback about the partners meeting of the Network for Water and...

Online collaboration in action

For me, the Internet is about collaboration. The past weekend has made me think about the similarities and differences regarding some of the collaborations I am currently involved with. I'm also thinking about how best to enable collaboration between those collaborations. Three collaborative groups The three collaborations I was connecting with over the weekend were, in order of the time they have been around: Kabissa, Coalition of the Willing, and Collaborators Connect. I came to Kabissa when it already had an impressive reputation and track record and I was very new to Internet enabled collaboration. I came to Coalition of...

Talking Sickle Cell and Stars!

At the time of Wednesday’s weekly UK-Nigeria online meeting, John Dada was busy attending a partners’ meeting of the Network for Water and Sanitation in Kaduna, Nigeria. But he didn’t let a small matter like that stop him contributing to the meeting via email! As usual, a wide and varied list of topics was discussed, ranging from the treatment of Sickle Cell patients to the wonders of the night sky in Kaduna. Let me begin with an update on the subject of Sickle Cell and the efforts being made to combat this terrible disease.

Reflections on a good week at Dadamac - the parts and the whole

I haven't blogged here for a couple of weeks, so a rather longer one today - giving details and context. Talking with people Tuesday - and smart phone software Wednesday - Indigo - and ICT use in Sub-Saharan Africa. Thursday - developing Dadamac.net Flexible Fridays Think Africa Press - Information sharing and visibility Culture and mobility in the Dadamac community Systems thinking around education, ICT, the Internet, and “socio-tech” Wikis, Diigo, Dadamac and tagging ICT for climate change - and other purposes - how to avoid talking past each other Conclusion 1 - Talking with people Not so long ago,...

All in an hour!

This week’s UK-Nigeria online meeting brought literally life-changing news. We learned that two children chosen from the many thousands facing the nightmare of Sickle Cell Disease in rural Nigeria would be sent to Italy for rarely-offered stem cell treatment. That leaves John Dada the unenviable task of selecting which youngsters to help, although the Italian hospital ‘s doctors have certain medical criteria to assist him in his decision. We have yet to learn the full details but, as a paediatric nurse myself, I have been thrilled by the remarkable progress of John’s Sickle Cell programme at Fantsuam in the past...

Vision and practicality at Attachab

This update from Frances was sent from rural Nigeria to the UK this morning. "Reubens, from the Congo, started work with some volunteers at Attachab this week. He has a vision of how Attachab will look that prefectly mirrors the dream that John Dada had, but so far did not know how to put into practice. In particular Reubens loves and appreciates trees and will do all he can to protect them or make use of them when they come to the end of their life. First of all Reubens has transported a large load of bamboo to the site...

Quality at Fantsuam!

Wednesday’s online Skype meeting between the UK-Nigeria illustrated the quality of the team that John Dada has been able to build at Fantsuam Foundation. For although three ‘main players’ from the organisation were unable to attend (namely Comfort, Kelechi and John himself), in their absence the weekly business was efficiently and effectively dealt with by Frances, Chollom, Ladi and John Irugua. John Dada had sent apologies on their behalfs by email the previous day. They were all busy attending guests from the VSO offices in Ghana, Burkina Fasso, Cameroon, Canada. John had also emailed the news for inclusion at the...
