From Chicks to diabetes all in an hour!

John started this week’s UK-Nigeria meeting with the news that the new Divisional Police officer had just visited Fantsuam Foundation. John pointed out that it is: “Unusual for a senior police officer to leave the tarred highways and come on our kind of road to see us, anyone who wants to come to FF, will be brought there by the first motor cycle taxi he asks. He is new in town, only two weeks old and has come to express appreciation for what he's heard of FF and our services. He felt he needed to come in person rather than...

Woman and ICT

No two UK-Nigeria meetings are the same and this week was no exception. Although prior to each meeting I email an agenda this is only a guideline and acts as a memory jogger to ourselves to review certain aspects of the many Fantsuam Foundation projects . This week after item number one the agenda which is always “Meet and Greet”, John Dada used the hourly typed meeting to help formulate his thoughts and ideas. Although this is often a part of what our meetings are for this was the first time that we have devoted a whole meeting to such...

Unexpected but welcomed funds

John Dada received new funding from the Small Grant of the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) to provide training on climate mitigation at the rural levels. As it was a grant that was approved over a year ago Fantsuam Foundation had despaired of it ever coming, but it arrived last week. John reported that already Fantsuam has lept into action: “A new training course will start at Attachab next week: Erosion prevention and control Markus has gone to town with Thomas to purchase concrete rings which we will use to build a small bridge to the Attachab road. Community members will...

Lab update & other news

It has been over a week now since Linus the local engineer from Fantsuam arrived in London. Together with TechDev and Comic Relief he is working with the University to see how the local Nigerian waste plastic can be turned into plastic tiles. Linus will be working alongside the University team for two months and during our weekly online meeting with John Dada John told us that he is planning to visit Linus’ family in Jos to update them and to check that all’s well with them as they will be missing Linus. The UK team are also hoping to...

A weekly update

If you were to look back over the past four years my blogs which record and capture a very small aspect of Fantsuam Foundation life as discussed during the weekly meeting. Sometimes it is hard to picture the on the ground realities which make up the daily struggles of FF and it’s host community. As John reminded us when we asked routinely how things were he said “We never lack the heart-rendering at this end " So although we always have positive news and achievements to share please remember it is even more impressive as this is against a continual...

FastTractor Update

During our weekly UK-Nigeria online meeting John Dada informed us in that : "Sixteen youths were needed to help offload the implements from the trailer of the FastTractor . This has now freed the trailer to be used for other farm work such as bringing home farm produce. This is expected to start in the next two weeks. Some clients have come to request to have the tractor fetch some building sands from river banks and the driver will start that next week". This photo shows us John Dada at the wheel of the tractor and the gentleman standing by...

Care of the Elderly

John Dada , of Fantsuam Foundation , Nigeria was recently asked to contribute to a Pension watch blog. Below is his contribution. In May 2012, the Governor of Ekiti State flagged off the second batch of elderly citizens who receive a monthly stipend, bringing the total to 20,000 ( http://ekitistate.gov.ng/2012/04/fayemis-care-for-the-aged-in-ekiti-2/ ). Each of the elderly citizens are entitled to N5000 (about US$33.00) every month. The Ekiti State Social Security for the...

Updates from Fantsuam

At this week’s UK-Nigeria meeting John Dada of Fantsuam Foundation told us that he had had a phone interview with KIVA. John went on to explain that KIVA is seeking partners who use local solutions to provide access to microfinance. They have 3 levels of intervention: above 2 million, above 200,00 and 20,000 USD - the smallest amount being the most appropriate for Fantsuam’s needs. John reported that KIVA have not been active in Nigeria, but that Fantsuam have been following them up for about 5 years now and a recent visitor to Fantsuam from Dublin offered to re-introduce them...hence...
