Can Dadamac Become a Virtual Organisation?

Hi Pam, Some months ago, in one of your initial E-conversations with me, you gave me a detailed description about your plan and vision for Dadamac. We also talked about building a roadmap for the future. This week, as I was reading an interesting piece about the virtual organisation on the Economist website, it struck me that Dadamac probably has all the makings of becoming one. In the coming years, Dadamac will be driven primarily by mobile assets like people, knowledge and information. I call people mobile assets since those working for Dadamac (either as full time workers or consultants)...

Open Source Mobile Phone Solution for Surveys

Hi Pam, Here is something that might be of interest to Dadamac and FF. I am pasting a press release that I got from my friend, who is a doctor in the US. Here goes: Researchers from Makerere University and their collaborators from Norway, India, Ethiopia, South Africa, the United States and Pakistan unveiled openXdata at Kampala on November 12. OpenXdata is a community-developed, open-source, enterprise end-to-end software solution that revolutionizes surveys and studies by changing the way in which data collection, data management, and data analysis is carried out. Computer scientists and experts in public health, education and development...

Of Highways and Footpaths

Hi Pam, I am not sure whether what I am putting up now will be of interest to all. But those who live in big cites and towns, and are used to crowded, high traffic zones in urban environments, will probably like and agree with this contrarian view on urbanisation. In a recent interview to an Indian newspaper, Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogota, Colombia, said that the quality of footpaths (and not highways) determine the quality of life in a city. "The single biggest difference between the infrastructure of an advanced nation and a backward nation is its footpaths,...

Climate Change Solutions for Poor Farmers

Hi Pam, Nikki, John and others in the dadamac team and community, Here is something that all of you would find interesting and useful. I just read an interesting story on agricultural solutions for farmers to tackle the multiple challenges of climate change, desertification, high energy demand and an exploding population. Dr William Dar, Director General of the India-based International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) says, "The world is facing a perfect storm, with a number of huge problems converging around us. At the centre of this storm are the poor people, who depend on agriculture for...

Phones and Fantsuam

Yesterday's online UK/Nigeria meeting saw several exciting developments. First and foremost was the news that Fantsuam has reached agreement to broadcast its radio signal through the communication towers of Nigerian Telecoms company NITEL. Because these towers are much bigger and higher than those currently used, Fantsuam will now be able to serve a far wider area! In fact ,Fantsuam will be able to mount it's equipment on masts in Kafanchan and Zonkwa which will enable them to reach distances of up to 70kms. Also as a result of the meeting between these organisations, the telecoms company has asked Zittnet to...

Education and ICT

Hi Pam, Your chat with me this morning set me thinking about ICT. As I told you, I have been toying with the idea of studying further and adding to my knowledge and skills. But it almost seems impossible for me, since most of the online courses (I am not even thinking of proper, offline courses) seem unaffordable, in term of time and money. Some of the best online courses in UK and US cost a bomb for somebody like me in India. This is where I think ICT can play a crucial role in filling the gap for many...

Defining the space

As I look around this online space I see potential that reminds me of childhood visits to the new homes of my many uncles and aunties. I adored my uncles. In my eyes they were big, strong, fun-filled heroes to whom nothing was impossible. When their cars broke down (as, in those days, cars frequently did) they fixed them. If their new home didn't have a bathroom, they put one in. If a door was in the wrong place they moved it - the same with cupboards and walls and windows. They transformed poky little sculleries into shiny kitchens. They...

Post BarCampAfrica

Participants at this week's UK/Nigeria online meeting were eager to share feedback following Dadamac's successful 5th anniversary celebrations of Teachers Teachers from BarCampAfrica . It was agreed by both teams that the day had proved both enjoyable and productive. Our friends in Nigeria expressed their delight at the quality of the contacts that they made and already plans are being discussed to move forward the debates about open software and equipment for the new Community Communication Centre. In fact it was online at BarCampAfrica that John Dada was able to tell us the exciting news that their CCC had just...
