Going to School in India

Hi Pam, Thanks for forwarding Sam's views about fish farming. I agree with him that sustainability can come through empowerment and lasting peace. But creating that peace is not easy, in places which are threatened by violence and unrest. And empowerment can happen only when people are ready for change to happen. It has been a busy week for me so far. But it also became an interesting week, thanks to my meetings with people like Lisa Heydlauff, who has been living in New Delhi for many years now. Lisa heads a non-profit trust called Going to School , an...

Joining in with the dadamac community

The idea of dadamac.net is that is should be an "online home/office/clubroom/study-space/whatever-we-need" for the growing dadamac community (which welcomes newcomers). We started off by "preparing the reception area" i.e. the home page and such like (this area needs more work - fewer words, more pictures - but is well under way). Now we are ready to start graduallly inviting people in - probably people we already know to start with - simply because they already have shared interests and onging shared conversations. As the conversations develop other people, newcomers to dadamac, may decide to join in. At first we'll do...

Hand Held Learning and Ago-Are, rural Nigeria.

Folabi (Fola) Sunday teaches in a primary school in rural Nigeria - a motor-cycle ride away from Ago-Are, in Oyo State. He is a Dadamac Self Directed Learner, who keeps in contact with the "connected community" through his phone, and joins in First Thursday chats whenever he can. Fola is currently learning more about ICT and solar energy from Ricardo and Graham (in the UK) and others in Minciu Sodas and Dadamac, through chats and emails. This post gives an introduction to Fola and his current concerns as discussed at the October First Thursday chat. He is working on a...

Sam, Fishing and more

Hi Vijay. Welcome back and thanks for sharing interesting news about your trip. I feel I know you better since that letter. You mention fishing, and that prompts me to introduce you to my friend Samwel who lives near Lake Victoria and is also concerned about declining fish stocks. Sam was at First Thursday today, and his concerns featured strongly in our chat. You can see the full chat here in the worknets archive. However is it quite hard work to read all through a two hour chat, so I have also saved it as a google doc here, and...

Learning from the Fisherfolk

I just got back to New Delhi (where I stay) after an exhilarating trip to the southern coast of India. I went there to report on the post-tsunami projects in a place called Karaikal, about 150 km from Pondicherry. Both Pondicherry and Karaikal were under French rule for long years. This is was the first up, close and personal experience with the fisherfolk community. I learnt so much about the way they think and talk about life and work. The tsunami in December 26, 2004 devastated their lives and livelihoods. In the past 5 years, with help from relief and...
